This popular Bondi café/restaurant is a great option for date nights. Due to a change in plans, my partner was under pressure to find a last minute ‘date night’ venue – he called Brown Sugar on Friday morning and was put on a waitlist. Lucky for us, there was eventually a cancellation and we managed to secure a table for the 8pm sitting.
This small bistro-style, BYO eatery is tucked away on Curlewis St and whilst the seating is rather cosy – we were practically thigh to thigh with fellow diners – the friendly staff, upbeat vibe and the simple but impressive menu was more than enough to leave a lasting impression (and earned my partner huge brownie points).
Be warned however, this probably isn’t the best place for a first date – it’s cosy (no privacy), loud (your neighbouring diners will probably talk to you) and probably a little too casual. The wait staff are knowledgeable and willing to chat but other than that there’s not really much else for conversation starters. Other than the menu.
Oh, the menu!
There is an entire blackboard wall full of choice and for a good fifteen minutes, I wavered between the pork belly, barramundi, squid ink pasta and fish pie (their specialty) – opting (finally) for the pork belly. My partner was brave enough to tackle the 700g Tasmanian fillet (he did it!), washing all this down with a couple of bottles of red that we bought on a recent trip to the Hunter. Of course, no date is ever complete without mouth-watering dessert – we decided to (romantically) share the Hazelnut chocolate fondant with espresso ice cream, which was absolutely divine.
If you’re after a regular date night staple (or maybe on a second date), or dinner with friends, try Brown Sugar – you’ll have a superb night without the usual Bondi-pretentiousness guaranteed to offer a wide selection of delicious food that never disappoints.
