During the day Sappho Wine & Tapas Bar in Glebe is a cute bookshop with a café courtyard out back. You’d probably come here with the girls for a coffee and a gossip. At nighttime however, the courtyard glows with colourful globes and fairy lights, turning the humble bookshop into a glittering tapas and wine bar.
The transition from day to night is amazing – and while you still have to a squeeze around café-style tables that cant quite handle a multitude of tapas dishes, it’s easily forgotten as Sappho has that unintentional who-really-gives-a-sh*t kind of atmosphere…. perfectly Spanish!
You don’t come here for fine service or because it’s fine-dining – you come for the authentic food and the relaxed outdoors area – which, when we last visited was a little on the quiet side.
For that reason, Sappho is perfect for double dating rather than a first dates. Like the lights, the music is pretty low so it may be a little too on quiet for new daters. As a pair of couples however, it’s perfect – you can reel off a list of dishes, tuck in together and have your conversation take over where the music fails.
The tapas has a Greek twang to it with haloumi and lamb kibbe on the menu and as a whole, you could randomly order 10 dishes and polish them all off – you’re pretty much guaranteed that one of you will love each different dish that comes out.
Sappho isn’t one of those restaurants that you would sit in all night long so after you’ve indulged in all the tapas you can handle head for a few cocktails in a nearby bar… there’s plenty of options.
